ABOUT Independent Curators International

Independent Curators International (ICI) produces exhibitions, events, publications, research and training opportunities for curators and diverse audiences around the world. Established in 1975 and headquartered in New York, ICI is a hub that connects emerging and established curators, artists, and art spaces, forging international networks and generating new forms of collaborations. ICI provides access to the people and practices that are key to current developments in the field, inspiring fresh ways of seeing and contextualizing contemporary art.

In 2014, ICI exhibitions were seen in over 37 venues in 15 countries and 11 U.S. states. Emerging curators from 24 countries participated in the Curatorial Intensive, ICI’s professional training program, with courses held in Addis Ababa, Mexico City, Moscow, and New York; and more than 60 curators and artists contributed to ICI’s talks, public programs, and research initiatives.

ICI is a small non-profit with a large purview. Over the last 40 years, ICI has produced 128 traveling exhibitions and profiled the work of more than 3,700 artists and curators, working with 478 museums, university art galleries, and art centers in 49 states and 42 countries worldwide, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, and Western Sahara. Experienced by nearly 6 million people, the exhibitions and events have attracted extensive local, national, and international press, and are placed in a critical framework through accompanying catalogues and books published by ICI.

There are currently 327 alumni of ICI’s Curatorial Intensive program, based in 61 countries and 22 U.S. states. ICI seeks to stay connected to its vast network of curators and to stay updated on current projects and exhibitions.
