Mária Čorejová (1975) is a visual artist, graphic designer and cultural manager. Drawing is the primary domain for her artistic expression. It's the medium that suits best the intention: to interpret ideas by processing visual material in a free and imaginative manner.
The image becomes a literary work; she practices the mixing and linking of ideas and the symbolic meanings of objects to create her pictures, using very accurate drawing as her technique to transform, or build, her thoughts into “artistic designs”. Despite their artistic complexity, Čorejová’s pictures make the impression of being representations of only the most central themes (or cores) of grand, complicated and not exactly common stories. Through these motifs, we can discern elements of various problematic aspects of our present-day society, such as the clash of ideologies, as well as religious or gender stereotyping. Also, symbols of personal freedom and an individual’s interior life receive extensive attention in the work of this artist. She almost never uses colours; the black (and white) line in confrontation with the working surface is sufficient for what she wants to express.
And this draws one’s attention to a most interesting feature of Čorejová’s pictures. It is the presence of the dominant black area, which is not only an impressive artistic element propelling her drawings closer to the techniques of painting, but also frequently the main carrier of the content of her work. The black matter dynamically overwhelms the picture, streaming through spaces outlined by various forms of architecture, filling in empty places, disturbing the integrity of individual items in the picture, and making use of its mysterious darkness to communicate the action of the figure.
Mária Čorejová moves with confidence through a number of fields of drawing – from complicated spatial compositions to individual figure portrayals, “one act” pictures alternating with elaborate scenes. In addition to drawing, she also devotes effort to painting, video and installation. As well, she stands behind a number of projects which support contemporary Slovak art and culture and their presentation (Burundi, 13m3).
