Gray Box: Heavenly Foreplay/ Song of the Senses II. | 2016

„Who is this that cometh up out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?” Song of the Songs / This clothing-performance is built around the lyrics of the Song of the Songs and tells the story of the liberation of the sexuality by following the „dramaturgy” of Passover celebratory dinner. The performers provide the symbols, scents, and tastes, but the sensing of the aforementioned is for the audience – since this performance is about personal liberation. First we ritualistically washed the hands of the audience members. Then from the „table of senses” each blindfolded individual got a unique combination of sensations from fragrant spices, and soft fabrics, while whispering parts of the Song of the Songs. During the performance we „decorated” and loosely knotted together pieces of fabric around the audience. These are from the Gray Box custom-designed fabric inventory. When the performance was coming to a close the members of the audience had to „undress” these garments from each other. By depriving them from vision and stimulating the other sense we tried to amplify the synaesthesia of the quoted lyrics.
