    Marishka | 2011

This installation was co-created with Marta Zuravskaja, and Antónia Zsanett Kiss at Helnaes Island in Denmark. We portrayed the story of Marishka, a fictive woman, from the start of her pregnancy to the birth of her child, giving it an almost performative nature as the statue changed over time. We constructed her body together with the students and professors of the folk high school and decorated her with tattoos. The birth itself was also “conducted” with their help, making the whole community a part of this snow woman’s journey. Personifying her we held small rituals and sang songs to her. Its inception came from the fact that the number of births have been steadily declining on the neighbouring islands, and we wanted to raise awareness for this issue by creating a kind of fertility goddess statue.
