Société Réaliste's EU Green Card Lottery Project investigates the contemporary global socioeconomic phenomenon of the emergence of a new class of permanent migratory workers. In the New World Economy the migrant worker is a "human resource" whose only right is to produce, work and then return. Migration itself becomes a business driven by economic imperatives and creating enormous political repercussions. Société Réaliste wants to examine the Western policies that have created this "permanent migrant worker" class in the service of globalization and pose the question, "Who benefits"? By inverting current migration patterns and encouraging non-EU citizens to apply to emigrate to the EU, Société Réaliste will reveal the implicit biases of current immigrations policies. Société Réaliste proposes a multi-part project consisting of a website, a marketing campaign and a physical installation to create a contrived bureaucracy that appropriates the form and tactics of a real immigration service. The three components will work together. The website will be designed to mimic "parasite" websites - sites set up to prey on aspiring immigrants by charging for "application services" that are actually free and promising a better chance at winning the lottery. The marketing campaign will promote the website and the physical installation will be an actual office devoted to offering EU Green Card Lottery services.
