Photos taken on board of ZIM Shekou, similar to the civil ensigns of certain states with open registries, such as Antigua, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Cambodia, Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Liberia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Panama (incomplete enumeration based on the list of the International Transport Workers’ Federation). Since the 1920’s, ship owners can register their vessels under a flag of convenience for business related issues, in order to operate them under the laws of their flag state. As of today, more than half of the world’s merchant vessels fly a flag of convenience. The flags fallen on the floor recall an iconic painting of Soviet socialist realism, the central piece of a triptych of Geliy Korzhev.
