Carbuncle offers a clinic-like environment with small objects exhibited as if they are scientific experiments. Inspired by a creature comes by the same name in SquarEnix's Final Fantasy RPG series, Carbuncle deploys a narrative that comments on viral infection, in particular towards a perceived form of beauty. The title suggests two contrasting meaning, one which refers to a specific type of garnet while another, a form of tissue inflammation, often appears at the back of the human body. Looking at the recent trend, or perhaps obsession towards precious stones in Indonesia, Carbuncle hopes to draw the parallel of such social phenomenon to a potentially harmful and luring infection.
