ARTIST STATEMENT

Kelvin Atmadibrata (b.1988, Jakarta, Indonesia) accumulates strength and power of rejects. He constantly questions the notion of gender and sexuality and pays particular attentions to masculine attributes and queer culture through ero-kawaii (cute erotica).

His practice includes drawings, mixed media, installation and performance which recreate narratives and characters based on RPGs (Role-playing video games) theories. His multi-disciplinary projects are heavily inspired by Konami's genso Suikoden (幻想水滸伝), an RPG based on a late 14th century Chinese historical fiction, Shui Hu Zhuan (水滸傳). Also known as the Water Margin or All Men Are Brothers, it tells a story of 108 outlaws forming a formidable army.

Kelvin is assembling his own editions of 108 rejects as a fanon of genso Suikoden. Partially canon and fan fictions, the characters are visualized through hyper-masculine approaches as the artist manipulates folklores, myths and historical narratives, creating versions with all-male populations of characters and demi-humans.

Kelvin Atmadibrata graduated with Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) majoring in Interactive Media from School of Art, Design and Media in Singapore's Nanyang Technological University. Previously living in Singapore for a decade, he is now based in Jakarta, Indonesia running PADJAK (Performance Art di Jakarta).
