  • Formed by hundreds paper bamboos, a typical weapon of Indonesian warriors against the Japanese in 1945., the installation seems to be products of child-like handicraft. Intentionally Kusama-centric, it suggests playful and kawaii masculinity.

    たけくらべ | 2014

たけくらべ rediscovers the artist's understanding of his personal gender and national identity as result of modern diaspora. Inspired by a classic novella by Higuchi Ichiyo and its manga interpretation by Suzue Miuchi as well as Louis Vuitton's collaboration with Yayoi Kusama and Katy Pery's 2010 famous hit, The One That Got Away. The series is consisted of two major works, Growing Up and Child's Play, perceived as its narrative's prologue and epilogue. The works were presented during Indonesia's independence day in Jakarta branch of The Japan Foundation.
