    animal phrases | 2010 - 2015

The “animal phrases” is not a series made in a formally rigid system. Its elements can be compared to notes about random thoughts jotted down during a six-year long period. These thoughts are personal, simple and occur in a person’s mind who is about to flourish. These thoughts have one thing in common. They are mediated by the carved animals who tend to appear in an organized posture, composition, action or environment according to my personal logic. When we observe animals their movements usually make us ask questions like where they would like to go what is their goal and why they are not taking a shortcut. However, as we do not speak a common language the answers to these questions remain an eternal mystery. I imagined that the animals as mediators of my thoughts get involved in unusual, surreal situations. I was searching for the solution how simple visions and feelings that are basically common places can turn into mysteries influenced and formed by mood and atmosphere. There are plenty of examples how human beings tend to influence the animal kingdom by envisioning it through situations typically human such as in cartoons and fables. However, when animals behave like human beings would do in reality it can have a stronger effect on the spectator than the same beahviour from a person. My animals do not move or speak, they are not dissections. They are creatures with own vision, story and destination which only I know fully. These animals only reveal about themselves or me that is allowed by the momentary atmoshere and imagination ......................................... ........................... ...................... ........................................... Ervin Békési’s carved sculpts revolve around the definition of the different representation of animals. Sometimes they are defined by cold geometry and the richness of material but also these thoroughly prepared animals can find themselves in an unusual position and atmosphere spiced up with humor and drama. These sculpts need our closeness especially because Ervin Békési’s “Animal Phrases” series’ protagonists are true to life insects, birds, mice and other smaller animals that are all defined by a detailed, very throrough and precise artistic process. The spectator is in awe due to the smoothly polished tender wooden surfaces triggering an extreme longing in the audience to touch which also means another factor for interpretation of his works. The members of the “Animal Phrases” Series are located on the wall, on a chair or on a rich wooden stand. The individual pieces are always connected thorugh recurring motives and the similarity in size and the use of material. The different topics and approaches introduce through surreal actions and compostions how animals turn into personal metaphors. Ervin Békési’s experiment show the relationship between nature and humans from a personal perspective through nine small sculpts made by classic sculpting techniques.
