ARTIST STATEMENT

Yoshiyuki Koinum（1982,JP）graduated from Musashino Art University in 2005. In the years that he had Solo and Group exhibition at some of galleries in Tokyo, Japan. And he spent two years as an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 2009 and 2010. After finishing the Rijksakademie, He moved to Rotterdam. He works with painting, drawing, collage and ceramic.

BIOGRAPHY

The work of Yoshiyuki Koinuma is influenced by ancient symbols from Buddhism and Shintoism, strange creatures from stories, exotic animals and computer games. In the term Avatar, these influences come together. During his residence in Leipzig, Germany in 2017, he chose radically for working on the paper. This medium gives him freedom in expression. When painting he feels like a fisherman, the paper is a big river or see full of animals. 

The past few years, he had made " Reincarnation Series " from his earthquake experience on 11th of March 2011 in Japan, "Grandfather Series ", " The Universe Series " ," Daily Paintings in the Newspaper " and "Collage Works" . It invites spectators to use their imagination and enjoy themselves, evoking their surreal imagination, made of fantasy world and outer space.
