ARTIST STATEMENT

For years, my work had been focused on emergent complexities within biological structures. I studied flora and fauna specimens in laboratory and natural settings, amassing a collection of observational drawings that became a visual compendium from which the larger work was composed. I was interested in aggregated organic elements, how relational systems of micro – macro dimensionalities were established between differing hierarchies of organization. I was fundamentally interested in self-contained universes, and my practice has expanded into examining structures of human culture that I find analogous to the ways in which biology organizes itself. I have begun studying systems of mythologies and rituals, specifically contrasting contemporary ritual (which to me, exists most purely within private, interior space) with archetypal, cosmic narratives, which I associate most closely with nature.  My point of departure for studying both at this point is the female body and rites associated with creation and generativity. I am currently engaged in bringing together bodies, performance, and ritual in hybridized interior-natural spaces. The work I propose overtly signifies ritual and mysticism as an antidote to presuppositions of a knowable world, a world commonly represented as reducible, categorical and knowable.
