ARTIST STATEMENT

I understand the surface of the earth, its visibility and our working in its materiality as an ongoing common sculpture. Layers of time and leftovers from ancient cultures as well as artifacts and goods from nowadays societies are central fields of my artistic practice.

Objects and materials are circulating on this planet over distances and time. Time is not a linear invention but a prismatic experience. We are always surrounded by many different qualities of time, by many different layers of former and upcoming cultures, by observable, living growth and almost invisibly slow processes of matter.

Using natural and cultural materials means always using them in regard to their origins, their meaning, their duration and their utilization. This leads me to observations of shifts in value as well as to knowledge about the physical and chemical properties of the used materials. Beside these physical presences I often work in my installations and sculptures with photographs and found images.

A picture of something still does have this magical power of being present and absent at the very same time. With regard to my field of interest images also do have the power to multiply monuments, sculptures, architectural structures and daily items from different periods. Along these moments of reflection and knowledge I build my works associatively.

I consider experiencing an artwork as an encounter with something other. Although my works do have a conceptual background, their spatial presence is crucial in my practice. This understanding of an artwork as a physical encounter with an Other is deeply linked to a profound need, a deep longing for yet undefined, unknown spaces.
