Nikola Balbercakova's work spreads on mediums of performance, video and installation. From her early work focused on material objects, she evolves her work further into narratives and metastories using cinematography, storytelling, language of low culture and survivalism, to create a specific language for emotional landscapes of today’s society in its complexity, toxicity and questionability. Through mixing modern and ancient research, popculture, cliché, low and high culture and techniques of communication, she puts questions on various ways of human happiness in modern society.
In her work, she focuses on specific characters as non-dominant identities in societal structures. Hyperbolized, affective, naive, ugly or nerd characters are creating stories and reconstructing dominant scenario, prescripted often through masmedia. Bizarre situations are deeply questioning a meaning of truth and false and challenging their still fundamental position in global post-truth era and their construction affecting our everyday life.
