REPRESENTATION

ARTIST STATEMENT

After first watching 'Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls' I practiced for days on end to be able to push the side of my eyeball with my finger. I was successful in this endeavor. When I do this to my eye, orbs and fissures of dark flash across my sight. When I look at the sun and rub my palms into my eyes, fields of orange rainbows stain my retinas. When my vision is frosted from an early morning wake up for work I can't tell whether there is a man standing in the corner of my room.  My drawings are at first anecdotal like diary entries, noting events as domestic as stubbing a toe, to the frantic and sublime feeling of being punched from inside the head, during a panic attack. The drawings serve as the 'design' or skeleton for my paintings. When I come to paint however this 'design' is betrayed. Rather, (like with my sight when I touch my eye with a finger) a swell of confusion happens that I need to make sense of.  Forms and textures are moulded, over worked and re worked, colours are handled without tone, they are brash and thick. Sometimes quick and other times slow in reaching completion but the "successful" results are paintings that situate the viewer, they are false environments, direct taps in to mood.
