ARTIST STATEMENT

Julie Skarland is a Norwegian visual artist - fashion designer living in New Delhi.

Before she shifted to India in 2005, she lived in Paris, where she worked as a fashion designer with her own brand and boutique. Julie Skarland’s work is multidisciplinary and often attempts a crossover between fashion and art. Her mediums are embroidery, photography, stop-motion-video, and one-off couture - wearable art. She has created a perfume: " Bluer than velvet " in the context of an art installation, and self-published a book with photographs from New Delhi: " Dilli dil ".

Julie Skarland’s ready-to-wear collections have been shown at catwalks shows in Paris, Oslo, and Japan among others. Her one-offs have been exhibited in numerous museums and art galleries, and with her visual art, she has been participating in various group shows in India, Norway and Germany.

She has received working grants for artist from the Norwegian Art Council, and been awarded the Trondheim local Authority's culture prize; " Artist of the year ", 2006.

Julie Skarland’s designs are collected by: Art Council of Norway's purchasing program for Arts and Craft. Museé de la Mode et du Costume, Palais Galliera, Paris. Museé de la Mode et du Textile, Palais du Louvre, Paris. Galleri Bodøgaard, Norway.
