ARTIST STATEMENT

My work investigates the medium of painting, its formal characteristics and fundamental constitution.

Because a painted image can only exist upon the three-dimensional object of an image carrier, I see paintings as both flat and object-like simultaneously.

These opposing characteristics - the painting's flatness and three-dimensionality - ought to be perceived equally, yet independently. Although they are mutually reliant and form a unity within the medium of the painting, they should not be confused, and should be understood as decidedly distinct if reciprocal elements of the painting.

Any three-dimensional representation on the surface of the object impedes the viewers perception of its flatness, and deflects their attention from its natural objecthood. It also negates the essential nature of the surface, on which painting as a procedure fundamentally relies.

The same is true of shapes rendered within the borders of the surface, since the original shape of painting is constituted by the margin of the image carrier itself.

For these reasons, the surface of the painting must remain visually laminar and the particular body of the image carrier (its shape, thickness, etc.) must be acknowledged as an object itself.

Thus painting can be presented to viewers in accordance with its innermost constitution.

Because of the objecthood imposed by the image-carrier, I do not consider painting as separate from sculpture, even though it has its own microcosmic rules and properties that are distinct from those of sculpture. In order to achieve a profound comprehension of the medium of painting I thoroughly deconstruct its components for the sake of examining their assignments and mutual relatedness. This deconstruction also enables me to arrange the fundamental elements of painting in a new order or discuss them as independent objects.

Therefore I simultaneously operate with pictorial and sculptural methods.
