ARTIST STATEMENT

Sum up the main character of your work, your long-term interests, and themes.

Jan’s work has a strong site-specific aspect, his interests arise from his long-time involvement and study of socio-political sphere of everyday life, dependent on history and contemporary contexts of society. The heritage of past and it’s relation to the today’s realities is his long-term focus.

Describe the context of your work – what are your inspirational sources and theoretical starting points, which artists and tendencies do you consider as referential to your work.

There is a clear layer of primitivistic approach arising from the essence of tension between hi-tech modern technologies and their use and the modernistic approach of craft, absorbed into every works thanks to a long-standing work in a restorer workshop, mixed together with a deep interested in the craft of graphic design.

Try to characterize what makes your work specific, wherein lies its force, what makes it different from the work of artists with similar approaches and themes.

Addressing the every topic straight forwarded, with no lack of humor or a sarcastic perspective, together with a very thorough treatment, devoting a deep look for the detail, which makes the whole work.

What is your work process like? Do you deal with preparation and research? How do you search for your themes? How do you choose the media you work in?

From the common interest in socio-historical heritage of European society there arising endless numbers of possible topics, which are just waiting for being processed. For the last couple of years Jan was strongly influenced and actively reflecting topics that are devoted to environment and sonic ecology

What is your vision for the future? How do you want to develop your work and continue your previous projects/realizations? What is your long-term goal/dream?

From pedagogical point of view, Jan's goal is to continue mediating the knowledge about the sound as a medium and the powers of sound in art, together with it's specialties and sophisticated aspects of treatment, mixed with a high importance of paying attention to giving the context a right and balanced amount. Developing a fresh and new way of doing this is one of the focus points of Jan's PhD studies. Spreading his skills and enhancing their quality is an essential part of his development as an artist and teacher.


BIOGRAPHY

Jan Krombholz (1987) is a mixed media artist, who has been recently focused on developing a system of knowledge mediation of physical aspects of sound and sonic media arts at high schools and universities in relation to multichannel sound systems and field-recordings. In mostly every his artwork you can clearly see a site-specific approach, awareness of the historical and cultural contexts and deep relations between them, the artwork itself, and current social and cultural situation. Jan Krombholz studies his PhD. at Pedagogical faculty at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Usti nad Labem, with previous master study at both Pedagogical and Art and Design faculties.
