ARTIST STATEMENT

Art is the way how to show things which can be hidden to others. I mostly work with situations I have found around myself. I have published several books in which I dealt with the documentary photography. The border of documentary photography is what fascinates me. I am super curious in the fact, how we can stop the situation in the right moment which can be almost incomprehensible for viewers. Space between real and fiction became the main motive I was looking for while working on BLOK 62 (http://www.imrichveber.com/blok-62). Thanks to this book I was selected for the artist residence program to Košice, Slovakia a few years ago. So that was the begining of the project of Something Is Missing which you can review now. Something Is Missing focuses on the Košice's district of Ťahanovce which was supposed to be a living place for tens of thousands of people. Pure communist utopia. However the construction was stopped in 1989 and this city district is still unfinished. That is what interests me so much and the reason why I have started my work there. I have asked myself how the urbanism, even unfinished one, can change living conditions for generations forwards. I was searching for moments which will be again floating somewhere between facts and fiction. Where the documentary photography ends. My photographs bring the wide range of interpretations and I like the fact that every viewer can make his own story behind each picture.

As an artist I have the one formal goal – work overall from picture itself, through book to installation. Exploring the connection between reality, pictures, book and installation is my the question nowadays. Photographers usualy works with pictures separately and then they let someone else make an edit, book or exhibition. I want to be able to think about all those things across. It does not mean that I do not want to collaborate with editors and curators. It is just about the way of thinking. I feel that the artist has to be able to cover all these functions just because of need of precision in his own work. To all these things I am closer, I hope, and that is why I have also decided to show my work to jurors of Cena Oskára Čepana. It is the best way how to learn something more about my work or even about myself. And mainly to try out how I am able to communicate with photography and how my work is readable for a public. Please, pay attention to the text which follows the series of pictures.  /
