ARTIST STATEMENT

Trela directly references the photographic material found in the depths of the global network. On the one hand, the images of obscure people acquire homeless status, their anonymity is emphasized. On the other, as a public good, they become universal and timeless. The artist speaks about a kind of recycling of images which, taken out of the context of previous collections, gain a new identity and, as intended by Trela, are put back in circulation in the Network in a new context.

Long fascinated with the human face, Trela focuses solely on portraits. To make them more compelling, she uses large formats that overwhelm the viewer. The paintings represent faces inscribed in squares, painted with oil on canvas and carefully protected with varnish. More resistant to destruction than drawings, they may be seen as finished or ‘dead’ from the perspective of the processes occurring in them.
