ARTIST STATEMENT

I’ve always wanted to be famous, and have come to the realisation that I’ve chosen art as my pathway to fame.

This shameless desire to become famous is commonly associated with reality shows and talent competitions, in which previously unknown, normal folk are transformed into influential, sought-after personalities; gaining constant opportunities and invitations, through their persistent self promotion.

These television shows and their ‘fame for everyone’ notion, provides me with the subject matter of my work and coincides with my interest in central figures in art history. These artists have dealt with transforming the everyday object into high art, and employ similar tactics of self promotion that has resulted in their status’ as household names, and made their faces equally as recognisable as their work itself.

In ‘I Could Do That’ I invite the viewer to become the famous artist, while leaving absent any visual proof of their identity or occupation; instead reducing them to a comical photo opportunity. I also provoke the viewer into regarding the other artists through my own eyes; claiming my position as an equivalent to the rest of the group and encouraging the viewer to apply the thinking: ‘If she can do it, so can I.’

I aim to make work that is accessible to people of all age and class; therefore I load my work with references to both popular culture and art history, allowing the viewer to appreciate from it what they will.

I try to challenge the seriousness of the gallery and art institution as a whole and seek to rebel against the myth and the mystery of the artist.
