ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist, Eldwin Pradipta always interested in working with new media art. This interest is based on the his familiarity with technology and unconventional mediums. In addition, as an art student that comes from an environment that is not close to the art world, Eldwin is more familiar with the various forms of popular art or commonly also referred to as low art.
In article titled "High Art Versus Low Art", John A. Fisher said that at early emergence of new media, the medium is always classified and used for low art purpose. But the classification of high art and low art is not only based on the media, but also based on the forms. Eldwin found while artists use new media in their work, and the works were finally classified to high art. This background is main reason why he use new media as a main medium in his work, with the intention that his artwork can be appreciated by many people, not just limited to high art or low art alone.
In the further development of the workmanship, Eldwin became interested in the classification of seni rupa atas and seni rupa bawah as Sanento Yuliman (Indonesian significant art writers & critics) described in "Dua Seni Rupa". One of Eldwin's childhood experiences is when he's viewing paintings sold along streets of Braga at Bandung, the city where the author grew and stay until now. Those paintings, that dominated by visual beauty theme of the natural landscape, could be the only aesthetic experience from seeing artwork that he got as a child.
Eldwin's opinion about Braga Street painting was fundamentaly change while studying art at ITB, he later learned that art institutions are studied only art classified as seni rupa atas / high art, and Braga Street painting are classified as seni rupa bawah / low art. This shift in perspective makes he aware about gap that exists between art world, especially in Indonesia and other general public in the vicinity.
Based on this anxieties, since 2012, Eldwiin uses street painting, especially from Braga Street, both visually and discourses around it as the basis for his work. In his latest work, he uses many other artwork from low art discourse that he can find in many Indonesian tradition and craft.

BIOGRAPHY

Eldwin Pradipta is a new media artist. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia at 17th May 1990. He graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung in 2013. Majoring Fine Art in Intermedia Art Sudio.
Many of his work are video and projection based. He usually use low art or craft as a basic material to be responded and then create new artwork.
Eldwin now stay and actively work at Bandung, Indonesia.
