ARTIST STATEMENT

Sum up the main character of your work, your long-term interests and themes.

I express myself through intermedia artwork. I work with video, an installation, a performance, but I also work with musicians, dancers and other artists. The decisive factor for the final form of my work is the space and the audience. The space is perceived in a scenographic sense together with costumes. The spectator is the main vibration medium which receives and transfers emotions. In my work there is a stage of meditation, getting out of the beaten track. It is a constant search to connect various fields of art such as music, video, an installation, literature, a costume, movement etc. The aim is to provoke emotions in a spectator, which they do not necessarily have to understand. From minimalist performances, where I usually play a role of strangers, doing common tasks such as tidying up, cleaning, selling things or eating and reading to artistic collaboration with many musicians and other artists, which develops my work. My work is based on personal experiences and deals with a question of being, identity, social inequalities, physicality, motherhood, social roles, family, traditions, values, manipulation, spiritualism where the human body plays the main and pivotal role.

Describe the context of your work – what are your inspirational sources and theoretical starting points, which artists and tendencies do you consider as referential to your work.

I am an intermedia artist coming from the Czech land and this will always be valid in my work. I do not perceive this as a limitation but as potency. The motivation for my work are then questions of identity, being and multicultural world. There are references to the Czech literature in my work, especially to that of Karel Čapek and Ladislav Klíma, and also to folk art and customs of various countries. I am interested in the works of some Viennese actionalists, Carolee Shneemann, Joseph Beuys, Angelin Preljocaj, Mony Hatoum, Carsten Nicolai, Bill Viola, Miguel Chevalier, and the painter Mark Tobey et Josef Váchal... In music for example experimental concerts of the composer Kryštof Mařatka. I am also inspired by contemporary theatre and dancing, works such as Daria Deflorian et Antonio Tagliarini, cccdanse. But I can not omit my interest in biology, functioning of the human body and the universe.

Try to characterize what makes your work specific, wherein lies its force, what makes it different from the work of artists with similar approaches and themes.

What makes my work specific is firstly my motivation to create and secondly the research and also the aspiration to evoke specific emotions in a spectator. It is a personal experience which is the strong foundation element of my work. Finding ways to connect different media and explore ways we can work with musicians, dancers, models is what moves my work in a given and perhaps an unmistakable direction. It is about shifting the boundaries of stereotypical roles where the musician is often perceived only as a static, nearly invisible figure which accompanies the storyline, the dancer dances and is silent and the model just exists. In my work I try to find more possibilities for cooperation with the above mentioned artists where the spectator´s experience is not left aside.

What is your work process like? Do you deal with preparation and research? How do you search for your themes? How do you choose the media you work in?

It all depends on a specific project, either I work with a topic that is already given or I deal with issues which are crucial in my life such as human existence, question of identity or social problems. For my work then I search for information in the field of biology, physics or chemistry, for example. I always work with a specific space, where I think about it, I must feel it, that is why I constantly vary my projects. I also consider the audience, I ask myself a question who they are and what I want to evoke in them. Very often I want the observer to stop, being pulled out of everyday life, I want to evoke curiosity and emotions in them and not only the positive ones. Furthermore, they are visions and sketches that determine the final form of my work. As an intermedial artist I can naturally express myself through video, an installation, a performance and I can deal with costumes, stage design, music and movement at the same time.

What is your vision for the future? How do you want to develop your work and continue your previous projects/realizations? What is your long-term goal/dream?

My goal is to continue the performance and video-installation, searching how far a performance can get without going beyond the theatrical performance line. Further, it is the development of research with musicians, dancers and other artists. For my work I would really appreciate a disposition of various spaces of big sizes where I could realize my projects. I would like to evoke even bigger interest in the Czech culture not only at a European but also at an international level.
