ARTIST STATEMENT

My art can be characterised by an intense relationship with objects and by exploring the fragile line between art and design, more specifically I examine the truth of the following statement: ”The artist can turn everything into an artwork.” I experiment with materials such as crystals, that by virtue of their properties arouse aesthetic appeal in order to examine the real role of the artist in the process of creation. Certain objects can trigger emotions, attachment, or anthropomorphic approaches in the viewer.  I try to define and reveal the effect generated by these objects and thus offer a new perspective to the viewer.

BIOGRAPHY

Bella Pál is a fifth year graphic art student at The Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 2010 she graduated from Secondary School of Visual Arts where she studied Glass Design for five years. During her academic years she also had a chance to participate in various group exhibitions such as YG Art Fair.

In her works she plays with different materials, which allows her to constantly explore new aspects of the border between art and design. In her newest series Bella is working predominantly with crystals, exploring their quality as a texture and foremost as a process. What makes her work intriguing is the way she puts this very process in motion and in certain ways she is questioning the notion of “artist’s hand’ or ‘artistic genius’. After the canvas touches the fluid that later forms the crystals on its surface she becomes a mere observer having only negligible influence on what the outcome is going to be. She lets herself to lose control over the result, yet creates an object very close to perfection. A pure, clear, controlled shape, a crystal that forms on the surface that is created solely by using the attributes of the material itself.

This logic and visual language can be applied for Bella’s former series as well, where she mostly worked with paint and metal.
