ARTIST STATEMENT

My artistic experience primarily involves the media of drawing, painting and video, although I am gradually moving towards spatial installations and even sculptural forms. Recently I am mostly interested in treating a picture as a spatial object of a body-like character or as a living organism seizing the reality.

During my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow I created series of works, in which a particular problem was transformed into some formal pictorial traits. For example the series „The illnesses of painting” includes portraits of people suffering from (mainly) skin diseases, in which - instead of painting
the external symptoms of the disease in question - I intentionally made mistakes in the painting technique due to which some parts of the painting looked as symptoms of diseases like syphilis or obesity. Then I started to put the material aspect of the picture in the foreground and emphasize its third dimension. This led
me to the usage of bended looms. I juxtaposed the initial soft and pleasant forms of the support with realistic and traumatic representations inspired by the photographs of Mell Kilpatrick.

Nevertheless in my recent activities I considered the representational motives unnecessary in the process of justifying the form of the painting and decided to leave only that which is the most characteristic for painting: the patch of color, gesture and space.

What is important for me is the reference to the tradition of painting, treating the picture as an object, as a body (as a sculptural form), making my pictures invoke emotional states esp. melancholy and the passing of time.

My process of creation is very often based on recycling old materials that possess their own history.

Education: 2004-2009 Student of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow,
painting faculty, prof. Andrzej Bednarczyk atelier, Grzegorz Sztwiertnia and Zbigniew Sałaj atelier.
