ARTIST STATEMENT

I embrace beauty. Fluid and rigid shapes weave together to form a singular rhythmic composition. The work focuses on the aesthetics of curving form, with paper becoming sculptural coming off the wall in a three-dimensional layering of paper and paint. These works are delicate, engrossing through the intricacy of repetitive interwoven patterns, shapes and colors. I never know what the finished product is going to be, instead letting the cutting be dictated by my mood or the music I am listening to. Each piece is reminiscent of sound and music. Like music, the work is made up of smaller parts to create one expressive experience. I welcome mistakes as part of the work. The cutting is improvisational. It is important for the work to be hand cut because it is both spontaneous and meditative, as I become lost in the process of making. Bursts of energy and rhythm are woven into each piece. I focus on creating moment where reality is suspended, and these quiet, elegant forms are all-encompassing.
I have recently increased the scale and intricacy of the paper cutouts and have broken out of the confines of the rectangle-shaped paper. I have started to include color gradients on smaller strips of cut paper that I weave together to create a shape that comes off of the wall dramatically. It has become more object than painting with an emphasis on dimensionality and density of movement. I take inspiration from Moroccan tiles and screens to make my patterns, as well as interlocking structures that mimic lacework. Visual and physical weight is added to pieces that have multiple sheets of paper layered beneath each other.
