ARTIST STATEMENT

About the „Birds are coming…”series:

I wanted to make a collection of birds - to create an own, idyllic one for myself. I wanted to be surrounded with different kind of tableaus, like those you can see in a bird adverb books. Roosters with shimmering tail feathers in a gold-colored country-yard, a peacock on a midden - this is what I began with, but the process had turned into a reseach, a hunt to discover other, rather unusual birds. I organised and represented them in a crowded and stratified, narrow field to emphasize the difference between the spieces. I wanted to avoid the narrative: any kind of movement or physical contact between birds was neglected and only the acknowledgement of the other birds’ disturbing proximity was allowed. To paint them made me really really happy. Buxom pigeons, ruffled doves, black swans, cormorants, blue white peacock, ruff, naked neck, silver gray Dalmatian pelican, vultures, ornamental fowl, ornamental roosters – were the types I painted. Sometimes (maybe because of their tiny size) I rewarded the smallest birds on the tableau with different treats: once, I put a rat into a sparrow’s beak, which was twice the sparrow’s size. It was extremely enjoyable to paint the pinkish or reddish parts of the birds like cams, beaks, crests and craws. They reminded me of glossy and membranous internal organs. It made me feel like I was painting a purple liver and not a gnarled beak of a swan; it seemed rather like a hurt - blood vessels rich than a throat puch of a pelican, or the testicles and not the wattles of a cock.

Deer with peruke:

I wanted to represent the love of the naked man and his animal. I chose my own animals. I wanted to have beautiful animals around me so I chose the peacock, the deer, the vulture, or the wolf. I wanted to recreate myself in the chosen animals. I was able to identify with a peculiar specimen on a deeper level than with the others: I found that my personality is particularly compatible with the so-called deer with peruke. This unusual type of deer is extremly rare and it is only known by few. On account of a testicle injur, the animal's level of testosterone gets upset and instead of growing hard antlers as do the others, the buck gets stuck with a soft and tuberous excrescence. As a result of this, the animal is going to be ignored as a male by the herd, won't be able to recreate, can't defend himself, and in most cases it is doomed to perish soon.
