Heart of the Matter explores the quarry site within a landscape as a subject and metaphorical vessel for the notion of trauma and the healing process that follows. A quarry is commonly a large deep pit; a by-product of excavation and displacement of raw materials like stone, rock or gravel from the earth. The void that is left behind upon the land is analogous to the aftermath of trauma (emotionally or physically) experienced by a living person. These “massive scars” are healed and eventually transform into lakes as they are filled with water over time. The installation is presented in the form of two projections: the video documentation of the excavation process and a slideshow of layered still images projected onto an assemblage of soil, leaves and stones. This work-in-progress installation was developed during my study trip at Loughborough University in late 2016.
