SPAMMY (work in progress) | 2016

SPAMMY is a work in progress, part video essay and part video presentation of a group show I curated in the streets of Beijing's hutong neighborhood in April 2016. The physical exhibition was 3D scanned and is the main narrative of the video, which focuses more broadly on my ideas about information noise and normalization, spam and machinic versus human perception of time. The documented exhibition, called Dog. Piss. Protection. Attachments., was a group show with several artists I invited to send me materials and instructions online, for their pieces, which I would place on boards that the people living in the dusty streets of my hutong neighborhood used to place by their car tires to protect them from dog piss. These original boards would be made of anything from scrap cardboard and wood, to thrown-away paintings. The exhibition functioned similarly as an online message board, where users post various content, placed into the physical space of the streets. The works were attached to material that was already considered waste, and the works got stained by local street dogs very soon after the 'opening'.
