    Works from solo show "White spots" | 2013

The melting point is the moment of maximum concentration and complete harmony, in which impulses, images, experience and imagination melt into one whole. I'm interested in silence and the capacity for introversion. In it, an intriguing and secretive expanse of “white fields” has been left for imagination and fantasy. “White patches” form beyond the images of the border, through questions that resonate within me and which arise when I look at photos by unknown authors and at the anonymous people pictured in them, which I find in Rīga’s antique stores, in my photo archives and accidentally discovered transient life stories of “little people”. Thus, in Čiekurkalns' 1. līnija's little antiques shop I spotted Ērika – a photograph of a little girl, whose name was written on her dress in spidery handwriting, and I found myself unable to let the photograph go. The kids in the photo stare at me all dressed up in preparation for a long life. All of them were real people whose destinies have remained unknown or only partly known by me, but repainted and interpreted filling in the information I was missing, they are transformed into quite different unworldly characters. I've never understood the habit of hoarding and the inability to throw out books, childhood drawings, diaries full of memories or old photographs. What impulse prompts the selective individual choice to throw something out and yet keep something else? It's similar to the feeling that overcomes me every time I walk into an antiques store and find myself unable to resist looking at photographs from days gone by. It could be that this is an echo of the noem “that's the way it was” described by Roland Barthes, or maybe an interest in images which have resided within me since childhood, or quite simply the trait characteristic of artists to keep hold of things which stimulate the imagination.
