    Esterházy Art Award / Short List 2019 | 2019

Malevich’s iconic Black Square - symbolising both the beginning and end of artistics abstraction - was first shown in 1915. In the same year Albert Einstein developed his theory of general relativity. Physics and Fine Art reached the point of no return at the same time. The Black Square in Art is like the black hole in Physics, a gate to the unmaterial world. Interestingly, even Malevich himself could not cross the edge of the Black Square. In the Paris Salon and the academies, art students enthusiastically studied and copied the sculptures and paintings of big masters, weather originals or their copies, just like the ancient Romans did while copying antique Greek sculptures. Malevich said: ”Michelangelo commited rape by carving David’s figure into marble, he destroyed the natural beauty of the stone. ’’ In an ideal world copies are being made endlessly, while the wheels of art must keep rolling. The old values are being totally destroyed, reviewed or recreated in this continuing progress. The - isms build on themselves like lego bricks. Meanwhile, Malevich crucified art on a square. What lies beyond the square, can it be passed over? The Black Square can be copied, but obviously the copy would only be a black square. The task is different here, the spell of the square must be broken. The tion dactilyotheca is a collection of copies of contemporary artists’ works, silicone molds of the surface of the paintings. The original colors and artistic intensions disappear, only my creations, the monochrome abstractions stay behind. I am the artist, the curator and the collector in one. The collection is adapted both in appearance and theory to Malevich’s Black Square, and the ideology behind it. The copies are not only copies of the original paintings, but their pure concepts, their theoretic substance.
