ERROR STRATEGY

BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTER, KATOOMBA (AU)

In recognition of the significance and outstanding beauty of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre launched The World Heritage Artists in Residence Program. This initiative consists of a 6-week artist residency for one artist at Bilpin international ground for Creative initiatives, sponsored by the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, to create a new body of work in response to the World Heritage Area followed by an exhibition at the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery.

Magda Wegrzyn from Torun, Poland was selected to participate in the inaugural World Heritage Artist in Residence Program and will present her body of work Error Strategy in the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. Her body of work is based on Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson’s exploration and crossing of the Blue Mountains area and its twofold consequences: The achievement of successfully navigating extremely challenging terrain and finding access to new land for agricultural purposes on the one hand and the dispossession of the traditional owners of the land and destruction of their culture on the other. Wegrzyn is intrigued by this duality of ‘exploration’ and through her exhibition will investigate the idea of errors made in past exploration of new territory and its implication for future generations.
