Geographies of Solitude

HOHOJAE SEOUL, SEOUL (KR)

The exhibition title, Geographies of Solitude, was inspired by Jacquelyn Mills' 2022 documentary. To me, this title is not merely a notation of space, but refers to the way of imagining, remembering, and relating to places that could not be reached.

Mount Kumgang has always been an object of longing—especially for women, who were historically barred from experiencing its scenery. In the late nineteenth century, the British geographer Isabella Bird Bishop documented the landscape through the eyes of an outsider. Following the advent of the modern railway, Mount Kumgang was reconfigured as a tourist destination, becoming both a national symbol and a site onto which the desires of colonial modernity were projected.

KIM BoMin approaches Mount Kumgang obliquely, tracing its inaccessibility rather than depicting it directly. By examining how “we” have been imagined and represented in the records of others and in archival images, she reweaves past images and narratives into a painterly language. Geographies of Solitude presents an inner cartography in which landscape and emotion are intertwined, unfolding at the intersection of the emergence of modern travel, national identity, and women’s desire for mobility.
