Motif of group therapy and exercise in the artworks of contemporary artists

MEETFACTORY, PRAGUE (CZ)

A string of videos prepared by the curator Tereza Jindrová presents the artworks of Jakub Jansa, Barbora Kleinhamplová, Liz Magic Laser, Markéta Magid, and the Edward Thomasson&Lucy Beech duo. Videos share the leitmotif of therapeutic or relaxation exercises, whose purpose is to release both mental and physical tension.

In all those works, it is possible to observe a critical sting that is sharpened by the frustration of an individual in the current world - be it politics, interpersonal coexistence or working pressure. By transferring the selected videos from the context of a gallery into the screening room it changes the experience of the audience - the viewer is confronted with the content in a more urgent manner, they feel tension and relaxation or empathise with the actor.

The string of videos was created as part of original research of the Healing exhibition (Czech Center Berlin, 2018) which is dedicated to the topic of health in contemporary art. It was presented in cooperation with Jindřich Chalupecký Society at the Festival of Animation Films Ji.Hlava 2017.
