Groping in the dark

MYMUSEUM GALLERY, BUDAPEST (HU)

Together with the artists the visitor of the show is also groping in the dark to find the artworks in the darkened exhibition space. The act of searching and the moment of having found what one was looking for are fundamental processes of scientific research and art making as well as any type of knowledge acquisition.

Juxtaposing the dark with the light enables one to explore reality, and is the basis of photography or of the concept of chiaroscuro in painting. Even in Plato’s allegory of the cave light plays a central role in the appearance of the shadows of Forms. It also means that playing with the combination of light and dark may only provide us copies, the representation of reality, still it enables people to acquire knowledge and leads to deeper understanding of the world.

In the works by Márk Martinkó, Tibor Nagy, Ákos Rajnai and Veronika Szendrő it is not only the combination of the dark and the light that is in focus, but also the movement. Through the light in the darkness the movement makes the subject of the artwork visible. The act of moving, as a cathalist, reveals the meaning, which could not be seen in the still mixture of light and dark.

Thus, what is otherwise ignored the artworks on view place into the foreground, and by doing so they also make pschychological processes of being lost, in search of something or craving for knowing more experienced by those visiting the exhibition.
