ARTIST PROFILE

Aidan Myers

  • United Kingdom (b. 1992 in Stoke on trent)
  • Currently in Cardiff, United Kingdom.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Myers’ paintings are explorations of the affective space that sits between the practice of painting, anatomy and materiality, through performative & gestural painting.

Myers paints with bodily instinct. It is a willing forfeit of subject matter in return for gut response. The act of painting signifies a relationship based on love, hate, passion and frustration, an exertion of multiple pluralities and contradictions at once, where nothing and everything is revealed at once and over time.

With sketches and references providing mere starting points for his compositions, Myers’ works are, in one sense, completely devoid of any particular subject other than the energies and processes of creation.

There is a sense that Myers breathes through painting, that it forms the most significant metabolic process of his function, necessary for the maintenance and understanding of life.

Myers began an artist residency at Cardiff School of Art & Design’s ‘Inc Space’ in August 2014 lasting 2 years – Throughout this period Myers' artistic development has flourished with his appetite for creativity increasing sevenfold. It is within this residency that Myers has produced some of his largest, challenging paintings to date. Notably it is large scale painting where Myers’ gestures and passions really thrive inviting the viewer to become completely immersed within the compositions. This residency has led to his current practical and written research into philosophy of materiality, it is through understanding philosophical theory and contextualising that Myers is enabled to challenge his own ideas and beliefs with his own paintings.
