    Divoká Šárka | 2019 - 2021

The project works with the phenomenon of granting legal status of personhood to natural formations. This is a legislative act which is most often adopted by states and minorities from so-called sacrifice zones. I understand these strategies of resistance as the result of initiatives aiming to protect nature from extractivism and also as an example of translating non-western epistemic and ontological frames into western discourse. I am interested whether this direction of thinking might be applied in the case of the Czech Republic and where its limits might be. To what degree can the conception of personhood be emancipatory within a neoliberal society? Does granting human rights to non-human actors reproduce anthropocentric schemes or does it rather subvert them? The project focuses on a fictional history in which Prague’s natural reserve Divoká Šárka has received the legal status of a person. My interventions and the interventions of other artists which I had invited to the project were presented in 2019 - 2021 as celebrations of the 30th and 31st anniversary of acquiring this legal status in 1989. I created a set of rules for the visitors which accounted for the space’s new status as part of the project. This set of rules parasites the visual style and rhetoric of the original visitor rules and was also part of a zine which included a map and the descriptions of the participating artists’ work. We are currently considering how to orient the project even further towards interdisciplinary collaboration and involve the general public, also because it opens further interesting questions about the function of natural parks and reservations. We are for example interested to what degree these spaces take part in developing sensitivity to natural processes and to what degree they have become spaces for recreation, allowing us to return to work after our weekend. We would like to quite literally take these questions from the peripheries into the city centers.
